On Wednesday 12 August 2026, people across the UK will witness one of the most impressive solar eclipses visible from the country since 1999. The Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, covering a significant proportion of the Sun during the early evening. Broadcasters, observatories, universities and event organisers can use specialist filtered cameras to capture close-up images of the eclipse.
Production teams can then distribute these pictures to LED displays, projection systems, broadcast channels and online streaming platforms. A well-designed AV system can combine live camera feeds with graphics, commentary and scientific information. Presenters can explain each stage while audiences watch the Moon gradually move across the Sun on a large display.
Capturing challenging images
Filming the Sun is not as simple as pointing a camera towards the sky. Cameras and lenses require suitable solar filters to protect their imaging sensors and produce a controlled picture. Without the correct equipment, intense sunlight can damage the camera and present a serious risk to the operator’s eyesight. Production teams must also manage changing exposure levels.
The picture needs to retain the visible detail of the Sun while clearly showing the progress of the Moon. Camera shading, monitoring and careful configuration all play an important part. Reliable communications are equally important. Camera operators, directors, engineers and presenters need clear instructions throughout the production, particularly when teams are working across a large outdoor site.
Sharing the eclipse with a wider audience
The current spell of hot, settled weather should provide favourable viewing conditions across much of the UK. Live streaming will allow broadcasters, observatories and event organisers to share the spectacle with audiences throughout the country and beyond. AV-over-IP networks and remote production workflows can combine camera feeds from several locations, providing different perspectives as the eclipse progresses.
AV teams can enhance the live pictures with expert commentary, graphics and scientific information. Reliable internet connections, backup power and local recording systems will help maintain a resilient broadcast throughout the event. Accessibility should also form part of the technical plan. Live captions, clear speech reinforcement, audio description and accessible online platforms can help more people experience this remarkable occasion.
Safety must remain the priority
The UK Health Security Agency warns that looking directly at the Sun without suitable protection can cause permanent eye damage. Ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes are also unsafe unless they have the correct specialist solar filters. Event organisers should provide clear safety information and ensure that cameras, observation equipment and audience areas remain properly supervised.
